# Off-Price Buying for Independent Retailers: A Practical Guide

Off-price is one of the most useful tools an independent fashion retailer has, and one of the least understood. Done well, it lets a boutique or regional chain carry recognised premium and luxury labels at a margin that full-price wholesale rarely allows. Done badly, it fills a stockroom with sizes nobody wants and styles that do not fit the store. This guide explains how off-price buying actually works, what to look for, and how to build it into a buying plan without damaging your brand mix.

## What "off-price" actually means

Off-price refers to genuine branded merchandise sold to retailers below its original wholesale price. The goods are authentic, usually current or recent season, and come from the normal supply chain. They become available for reasons that have nothing to do with quality:

- **Overstock** – a brand or distributor produced or bought more than it sold through.
- **Cancelled orders** – a retailer cancelled a confirmed order, leaving finished goods without a home.
- **End of season** – a season is closing and the stock needs to move before the next collection lands.
- **Channel rebalancing** – a brand wants to exit a market or reduce exposure in a particular channel.

Off-price is different from counterfeit, seconds or damaged goods. A reputable off-price partner works with authentic product, documents its origin and is clear about condition.

## Why retailers use off-price

The appeal is straightforward. Off-price lets you:

1. **Add recognised labels** that might otherwise require large opening orders or long approval processes.
2. **Improve blended margin** by mixing opportunistic buys with your core full-price assortment.
3. **Fill gaps quickly** when a category underperforms or a delivery from a full-price supplier is late.
4. **Test a brand** with your customers before committing to a forward order.

For many independent stores, off-price is not a replacement for full-price wholesale. It is a complement that makes the overall buy more resilient.

## Where the stock comes from

Off-price inventory moves through several layers. Brands sometimes sell directly to specialist buyers. More often, stock passes through distributors, licensees and consolidators who aggregate lots from many sources. At IAM Fashion, we work across this network from our hubs in Toronto and Bratislava, with partners and contacts in Milano, Prague, Munich, London and New York. That reach matters because the best lots are often time-sensitive and are offered first to buyers who can respond quickly and handle cross-border logistics.

## How to assess an off-price offer

Every offer is different, but the same questions apply each time.

### Brand fit

Does the label suit your customer and your existing assortment? A well-priced lot of a brand that does not fit your store is still a poor buy. Think about where the brand sits next to what you already carry and whether your customer will recognise and value it.

### Assortment and size curve

Look carefully at the breakdown by category, colour and size. A lot that is heavy in extreme sizes or a single colourway will be harder to sell through. Ask whether the lot can be split or whether you are expected to take it as a whole.

### Season and newness

Current or recent-season goods generally sell through faster than older stock. Core and continuative styles, such as classic knitwear, denim or outerwear basics, tend to hold their appeal longer than trend-driven pieces.

### Condition and documentation

Confirm whether goods are new with tags, how they are packed and what documentation comes with them. For cross-border shipments, ask what paperwork is available to support customs clearance.

### Landed cost

The price on the offer sheet is only part of the picture. Freight, duties, taxes and handling all affect your real cost. Work out the landed cost before you commit, and compare it with the price you can realistically achieve in store.

## Building off-price into your buying plan

The most successful retailers treat off-price as a planned part of the buy rather than an impulse. A few principles help:

- **Reserve open-to-buy.** Keep part of your seasonal budget available for opportunistic lots so you can act when the right offer appears.
- **Define your target brands and categories.** Share them with your off-price partner so they can bring you relevant offers rather than everything on the market.
- **Set clear rules on size and category mix.** Know in advance which sizes and categories you will and will not take.
- **Protect your full-price relationships.** Be thoughtful about how you present off-price goods so they complement, rather than undercut, your full-price brands.

## Respecting brand positioning

Premium and luxury brands care about how and where their products are sold. Responsible off-price buying respects that. In practice, that means presenting goods in a way that suits the brand, avoiding aggressive public discounting where that would conflict with the brand's positioning, and following any channel or territory restrictions attached to a lot. Retailers who handle branded off-price stock carefully tend to get access to better offers over time.

## Working with an off-price partner

A good partner does more than send spreadsheets. They should understand your store, filter offers to your needs, be transparent about origin and condition, and help with logistics between Europe and North America. IAM Fashion focuses on premium and luxury fashion for retailers in North America and Europe, and we curate offers around the brands and categories our buyers tell us they want.

You can see how we approach this on our [off-price page](https://iamfashion.ca/en-ca/off-price), and browse what is currently available on our [Offers page](https://iamfashion.ca/en-ca/current-offers-on-overstock-items-up-to-85-off).

## Common mistakes to avoid

- **Buying on price alone.** A low price does not make a lot right for your store.
- **Ignoring the size curve.** Unsellable sizes erode the margin you thought you were gaining.
- **Forgetting landed cost.** Freight and duties can change the economics of a deal.
- **Overbuying one brand.** Concentration risk applies to off-price just as it does to full-price.
- **Moving too slowly.** Good lots are often allocated quickly. Have your criteria and approvals ready.

## Getting started

If you are new to off-price, start small. Choose one or two brands you know your customers want, agree clear criteria with your partner and review sell-through carefully before you scale up. Over a few seasons you will learn which brands, categories and lot structures work best for your business.
